Understand your receiver’s results

A receiver can be online, hear a broadcast and upload it successfully. Each tells you something different.

Follow the four stages

  1. Radio

    The adapter is present and listening in a supported capture mode.

  2. Reception

    A genuine supported broadcast has been received and decoded.

  3. Acceptance

    The platform has acknowledged the submitted observation.

  4. Map

    An eligible recent report contributes to the map view.

Check the stage you care about. “Online” tells you about connectivity; it does not promise that a drone is nearby or that a report has reached the map.

Quiet is a valid result

Remote ID depends on a drone transmitting a format and radio mode the receiver supports, within reception range. Aircraft ADS-B has different hardware, traffic patterns and propagation. You can see aircraft regularly while receiving no drone reports.

Do not infer that every nearby drone is visible or that an empty map proves an empty sky. Check hardware health separately from traffic counts.

Why reception changes

Terrain, buildings, antenna placement, radio interference, aircraft height and transmitting equipment all affect what a receiver can hear. Compare changes at the same installation over time rather than treating the furthest report as a guaranteed coverage radius.

A well-planned antenna installation gives you a better starting point than a headline range figure.

Internet and queued observations

If connectivity is lost, the receiver may have saved observations waiting for delivery. Once it reconnects, check the queue and platform acceptance. A draining queue is different from a failed radio.

Saved capacity is finite. Long outages and storage pressure need attention; do not assume unlimited offline recording. An older accepted observation should not be presented as current live traffic.

Your station and the public view

The installation position belongs to the receiver setup. Public coverage views use coarse areas rather than publishing that exact antenna pin. Aircraft or drone positions come from the relevant observations; they are not the receiver’s location.
