Install a new receiver
One file contains the receiver software, installer, verification files and release documents. You do not need to download each member separately.

Download an update file on this device, then open your receiver's Updates page on the same local network.
Under Have an update file?, choose the downloaded .layer400update file and select Upload and verify. Your receiver checks compatibility before you confirm Install update. Keep it powered on until the update finishes.
Your receiver settings and identity stay in place. Do not upload the .tar.gz installation download here. You can also select Check for updates on an Internet-connected receiver. If your installed release provides Automatic stable updates, its Updates page shows the next scheduled installation and lets you pause it. See updates and recovery.
Download once. Follow the verified steps.
Installation commands appear after your download is available. They are matched to that exact version; do not reuse commands from an older release.
Copy the whole block, including its first and last lines, into the Pi's terminal. It stops at the first problem and leaves the terminal open so you can read what happened.
- 01Save the download on your Pi
Download it directly on the Pi, or copy the unchanged file from your computer into the Pi's Downloads folder. Use only the download offered by your Layer400 account. Using Raspberry Pi OS Lite or a Pi without a screen? Follow the copy steps. Keep the
.tar.gzfile intact until the installation commands unpack it on the Pi. - 02Check the download
The supplied commands check that your download is genuine and complete before installation. Wait for the checks to pass. If a check fails, download the file again from this page; do not skip it.
- 03Install Layer400
Continue with the installation command only after verification succeeds. Enter your Pi's administrator password when asked. The installer checks compatibility and free space, and keeps recovery files when updating an existing installation.
- 04Start the local setup assistant
sudo layer400 setupThe command prints this receiver's unique local HTTPS address. Open that exact address from another device on the same network. A local certificate warning is expected on first setup; compare the printed hostname carefully and never proceed on a public network.
- 05Connect your receiver
Follow the local setup assistant to your Layer400 account. Name the receiver, confirm its antenna location and return with the setup file when prompted. Older releases that ask for a claim code use the instructions included with that download. Never enter your Layer400 account password into the Pi's setup form.
- 06Open your receiver dashboard
Check that the receiver is listening and connected to Layer400. A nearby compatible broadcast is needed for its first accepted observation; a connected receiver can still have a quiet sky. Use Settings to change equipment and Updates for future releases.

Start with the message on your receiver dashboard or the troubleshooting guide. These optional commands run on the Pi if you need a health check or a support file.

sudo layer400-support-bundleReview the support file before sharing it. Do not send your setup file, account password or device keys.
Check your hardware.
Use the Pi and adapter combination listed in your download's hardware notes. A brand name alone does not guarantee compatibility. The setup assistant checks the attached hardware; a quiet sky does not mean a receiver is broken.
The first public release is for Raspberry Pi 5. Raspberry Pi 4 is not part of this release's supported hardware.
Use the 64-bit edition based on Debian 13. A 32-bit installation is not supported.
Choose a supported capture adapter. Keep the Pi's Internet connection on Ethernet or its other Wi-Fi radio.
Keep your computer and Pi on the same trusted network. The receiver needs Internet access to contribute.
This release supports the qualified Wi-Fi adapter in its hardware notes. Bluetooth Remote ID is not yet production-qualified; do not rely on it for detection.
